Fond Memories
My
Father was General Manager
Vin, What a wonderful surprise. My father was general
manager of the Park
for over ten years and left for the West Coast when the Ronsenthal Bros.
bought the Park in 1935. The Park was actually owned by Loew's Theaters
which was headed by Nicholas Schenck. My dad became an assistant director
at MGM studios and at Desilu Studios. Whow, what memories I have. My
father was particularly proud of the pool and the crystal clear water. I
vividly
remember how he used to take visitors behind the scenes where the
filtration
system was and proudly show them that the pool water was clearer than New
Jersey tap water. I also remember that he insisted on charging an
admission
of 10 cents because he felt that it kept out the rif raff. Of course,
those
were the years before 1935. It was depression time. I also remember
walking
the tracks of the various roller coasters during the winter when they were
inspected. As a kid, I was used as a "schill" for the magic act
right next
store to the office. I also worked the concession booths and knew almost
all
of the employees. I was ten years old and was a wild kid and all the cops
knew when the "bosses" son was running around the park. Hot Dogs
were a
nickel and so was a 12oz Pepsi. Rides were a dime and getting into the
pool
was high priced at 15 cents. It was the only pool in the country that had
a
sand beach and actually had waves. I was told that at that time it was the
largest outdoor pool in the country. I am now 80 years old but my memories
are as crystal clear as the pool was. Thank you for all the work that has
gone into your endeavor to rekindle a child's dreams.
