Fond Memories
The Most Wonderful Roast Beef Sandwiches
I have some fond memories of Palisades Park from the late
40's and early 50's. My whole family would go there two or three times
each summer. We lived in the Bronx, left early in the morning to go over
to Jersey and pick up my aunt and uncle in West New York and then go to
Palisades just in time for lunch. We'd go in and walk past the pool with
the waves, almost to the back where the big ferris wheel with the cages
was, near the scenic railway.
There was a place there that sold the most wonderful roast beef
sandwiches and had home made root beer in big frosted mugs. After that,
my uncle, who always wore a three piece suit and a hat even in 90 degree
weather, would take me on the Whip, the only ride he would go on. My
grandmother and her sister would play black jack with the ball toss. My
mother would take me on the big carousel that had brass rings and one
time we even caught one. My moms brother and his then girlfriend, now
wife, would go on the Caterpillar and then the roller coaster.
It was the best day of the summer. And I cried when they
tore it down.
Thanks.
